We held the WinGS Career and Research Talk: Global Glass Research Authority with Industrial and Academic Careers.

Mauro, invited by Associate Professor Madoka Ono of the Optoelectronic Nanomaterials Division, Institute of Electronic Science, was held on October 18th (Friday) in the Lecture Hall of the Frontier Applied Science Research Building. Approximately 25 people, including faculty and students, attended.

Dr. John C. Mauro earned his PhD in glass engineering and led the development of new glass and ceramics, including Gorilla glass, at Corning Corporation in the United States. He has received numerous international academic awards, including the Woldemar A. Weyl International Glass Science Award. Since 2017, he has been a professor at Pennsylvania State University, where he is active in a wide range of academic research fields.

In the career development lecture, titled "My life as an industrial researcher," the speaker taught us the necessary mindset and workflow for working in a company. They also discussed the need to adapt to each stage of a career: the first 10 years after joining the company (learning the job), the period of developing one's own methods, and the subsequent career path of creating a management flow. They also discussed how the situation at university differs from that at a company. Finally, they shared 10 things they wished they had known before starting work, such as maintaining a positive outlook, staying healthy, and getting enough sleep—all very positive ways of thinking.
In addition, as part of the science lecture, "Relaxation is everywhere," the professor introduced the long-debated but important issue of relaxation phenomena in glass, including an explanation of the MYEGA model he recently discovered. For researchers who usually work with electrons and light, the idea of ​​relaxation taking 1016¹⁶ years seemed like a surprising phenomenon, but there were detailed questions such as how it relates to working with nanoscale glass and what the most likely relaxation model is currently, making it a very worthwhile lecture.

According to Professor Ono's report, this support program was very beneficial for the students, as they were able to hold meetings to discuss co-authored papers and collaborative research, engage in discussions with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania via video conference, and interact with other students.
