On Friday, December 20, 2019, a diversity roundtable discussion was held in the Human Resources Development Headquarters conference room, featuring researchers working at companies that "want PhDs." Approximately 20 people participated, mainly graduate students from our university. In addition, seven people from Kitami Institute of Technology, a participating institution in the Hokkaido Block of the National Diversity Network Organization, participated via live webcast.
First, Ms. May Thitivat from Nitto Denko Corporation shared her experiences, including her research activities during her university years and her time working in a company. We also conducted a fun survey using smartphones with the participants.
Next, Ms. Eriko Ogawa from Amino Up Co., Ltd. spoke about the option of becoming a researcher at a company, personal achievements after employment, and what companies expect from PhD holders.
In the subsequent roundtable discussion, company representatives and participants were divided into groups, and a lively exchange of opinions took place regarding the future and careers.
In the participant survey, comments such as "Talking with PhD holders working in companies helped me envision my own future" and "Talking with female employees gave me a better idea of what a career in a company is like" were received, indicating that the event was very helpful, mainly in terms of "careers for PhD holders" and "careers for women."
Overall, the roundtable discussion was very meaningful, as participants were able to hear about the job hunting process for PhD holders, how they work in companies, and what companies look for in PhD holders.
