We will be holding a seminar on "Acquiring Knowledge & Skills to Leverage Diversity as a Strength ①: Learning How to Deal with Unconscious Bias" (November 9th).

The Hokkaido Network for Promoting a Diversity Research Environment (KNIT) has invited Tomotaka Moriya, Representative Director of the Unconscious Bias Institute, who has given training and lectures on unconscious bias to over 50,000 people to date , to be the lecturer for a seminar entitled "Seminar 1: Acquiring Knowledge & Skills to Leverage Diversity as a Strength - Let's Learn How to Deal with Unconscious Bias (Unconscious Assumptions)" as part of its efforts to promote diversity within the university.

Unconscious bias is said to be present in everyone and is attracting attention from various companies and organizations as an obstacle to promoting diversity.

unconscious bias

This concept is expressed in various ways, such as "unconscious assumptions," "unconscious biases," and "unconsciously biased perspectives."
Our brains have the function of "interpreting" everything in our own way, based on what we have experienced and seen and heard in the past.

For example, have you ever experienced something like this in your daily life?

- They sometimes use phrases like "It's usually like this" or "It's typically like this."
- I sometimes find myself thinking things like, "He's a man, so..." or "She's a woman, so..." etc.

Other,
I sometimes think that women are like this because they are like that.
I sometimes think that today's students are like this (negative image).
- I sometimes feel that international students from △△ are difficult to communicate with.
I think men who want to take paternity leave have low motivation for their work.

Do any of these sound familiar?

This event aims to help you better understand the significance of diversity by recognizing and becoming aware of your own "unconscious biases." Since it will be held online, we look forward to your participation.
