Based on an invention by Professor Miki Haseyama (Graduate School of Information Science), the research and development project "View Search Hokkaido," in which Professor Haseyama also participates, has been selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's FY19 Information Grand Voyage Project's "Development and Demonstration of Model Services" research project.
This research project is the first to be selected as a consortium of companies and universities within Hokkaido.
DataCraft, the user company, was commissioned by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to carry out this project, with participating companies and universities each contributing their own expertise in technology and content. Professor Haseyama is in charge of spatializing images.

This project aims to develop "Visual Context Search" (next-generation image search) and apply it to the tourism navigation service "View Search Hokkaido".
"Visual Context Search" (next-generation image search) is a technology that enables "vague and intuitive image search" that doesn't rely on text, by fully utilizing the human image processing ability. Based on the similarity and differences of images, and preferences extracted from the user's search history, it places a large number of images in a virtual space and guides the user to the appropriate location through a web browser. Because it has a low dependence on text for the search target, it is easy to deploy globally.
"View Search Hokkaido" is a walking-style sightseeing navigation service based on "visual context search." Users can freely search through a large number of high-quality Hokkaido landscape photos as if taking a stroll, and enjoy the captivating scenery. When a user selects a landscape photo they like in their browser, location and seasonal information related to the selected image, tour designs and suggestions, and related information are provided. It is also possible to make reservations and purchases for transportation and accommodations based on the suggestions displayed in the browser. Furthermore, when users submit landscape photos they are interested in, similar images are dynamically collected in the browser, the database grows, and the service becomes more comprehensive.
