The Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation is currently accepting applications for its FY20 scholarship program to support researchers returning to work after interrupting their research due to childbirth and childcare.
【Effect】
The Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation has established a separate scholarship program for research students since fiscal year 19, in addition to its existing "Scholarship Program for Research Students." This program aims to contribute to the promotion of gender equality in academic research by supporting the smooth return of outstanding young researchers who are raising children to the research field. The program is designed for research students who have returned to or are planning to return to research after interrupting their research due to childbirth and childcare.
[Target Fields and Eligibility Requirements]
(1) Those who have majored in a science-related field, primarily chemistry, at graduate school, have been enrolled in a doctoral program for the full period of time or longer, and have acquired the required credits.
(2) Those who, within the six years preceding April 1, 2008, were forced to interrupt their research activities for approximately three months or more due to childbirth or childcare, and subsequently returned to the university research setting, or whose return was scheduled to begin in April 2008.
(3) Persons with Japanese nationality or foreign residents in Japan.
*Age and gender are not considered, as long as the above requirements are met.
[Scholarship amount and duration]
(1) Amount of scholarship to be provided: 10 yen per month
(2) Salary period: Generally one year (from April to March of the following year)
[Application documents]
(1) Scholarship application form (attached form) co-signed by the guarantor.
(Include a statement detailing the interruption of research due to childbirth and childcare, and attach one copy of the maternal and child health handbook or the original birth certificate.)
(2) A letter of recommendation from your academic advisor at the university you are currently enrolled in, or from your academic advisor at the university before or after your return (no specific format is required).
(3) Most recent academic transcript
(4) Certificate of enrollment as a research student (if returning in April, this can be submitted after returning)
[Submission method]
Applicants must submit their applications to the Foundation through the professor or other relevant person in charge of the research department at the university where they are currently engaged or plan to engage in research. Submitted application documents will not be returned.

[Selection Process and Number of Hires]
Selection Process: The scholarship selection committee will conduct a first-stage selection (document review) and a second-stage selection (interview) to determine the successful applicant. Interviews will be held around the end of February.

(1) They have a high potential to become outstanding researchers who will play a leading role in the future.
(2) The applicant must demonstrate their ability to carry out the research plan and their preparedness for the research.
(3) The research plan is specific and excellent.
* Notification of selection results
(2) Those who advance to the second selection stage (interview) will be notified in early February, and interviews will be conducted.
(3) After the second selection (interview selection) is conducted (around early March), the results will be notified to the applicant and the professor in charge of the graduate school.
[Research lump-sum grant system]
When a research student selected as a scholarship recipient travels abroad for research purposes, they will be provided with overseas research travel expenses up to a maximum of 50 yen per person.
