We held a press conference to announce our "Declaration for Promoting Diversity & Inclusion."

On December 1, 2021, Hokkaido University announced:Declaration to Promote Diversity & InclusionWe sent out the message:

Accordingly, a press conference was held on December 2nd by Hokkaido University President Kiyohiro Takaragi.

Throughout its long history of approximately 150 years, Hokkaido University has upheld four fundamental principles as its founding philosophy: "frontier spirit," "cultivation of internationalism," "holistic education," and "emphasis on practical learning."
Currently, among the various reforms underway, it is necessary to (1) create an ecosystem that fosters excellent education and research and (2) uses this as a starting point for innovation. Furthermore, as a measure to enhance the value of our university's vast, beautiful campus with its rich seasonal changes, we are promoting the proposal to use the entire facility as a place for practical application of SDGs and decarbonization, in conjunction with the campus master plan.
Achieving the SDGs requires a fundamental shift in the mindset of students and faculty, with a view to goals such as 5. Gender Equality, 10. Reduced Inequalities, and 17. Partnerships within and among Nations. Therefore, we believe that strongly promoting diversity and inclusion is essential.

Within the university, we established the Hokkaido University Charter and codified a "Code of Conduct" that defines what all members of the Hokkaido University community should practice.
This Declaration on Promoting Diversity & Inclusion is linked to the "respect for human rights and diversity" in this Code of Conduct and is issued to strongly demonstrate the university's future commitment to the international community.

In conjunction with the establishment of the declaration, a series of four lectures will be held in December on "gender, sexuality, ethnic coexistence, and universal design," which are important themes for promoting diversity and inclusion in universities.Lecture SeriesIt will be held.
Also,"Hokkaido University's Six Months of Reflecting on Diversity & InclusionWe have been running a long-term on-campus campaign since November, titled "[Campaign Title]", which provides more opportunities than usual for various people, including students, to think about diversity and inclusion.

In 2026, Hokkaido University will celebrate a momentous milestone: its 150th anniversary.
In this 150th anniversary commemorative project, we have adopted the slogan "Light comes from the north," and just as light is composed of three primary colors, we have set three themes: Sustainability, Innovation, and Diversity.
We are determined to steadily promote the idea of "creating a new world from the north" in order to realize a brighter society.
