This award is presented to Rai Hiratsuka, a thinker and writer who studied at Japan Women's University, the predecessor of Japan Women's University.
It was established in 2005 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Teu's (a third-year student at Japan Women's University) graduation.
"In the beginning, woman was truly the sun. She was a true human being." - The opening lines of Raicho Hiratsuka's work.
Known for its literary works, "Seito" was Japan's first literary magazine created by women for women, and is considered the origin of the women's liberation movement.
And so it happened. Hiratsuka Raicho continued to be involved in modern Japanese issues such as the pursuit of women's political rights and the peace movement.
He influenced others as an opinion leader whose work was linked to books.
This award recognizes research and activities related to the realization of a gender-equal society and world peace through women's liberation.
We will honor her and pass on the legacy of Raicho Hiratsuka to the younger generation.
