Self-defense workshop: "Self-defense techniques for escaping crime"

DEIAs part of the Cabinet Office's "Campaign to Eliminate Violence Against Women," the Promotion Headquarters will hold a self-defense workshop for a safe campus, titled "Self-Defense Techniques for Escape," for faculty, staff, and students of Hokkaido University on Friday, December 23rd.

How can you protect yourself from danger in secluded areas of a university, in private rooms, or on your way home from university? How can you avoid becoming a perpetrator?
"Crime prevention knowledge and mindset to prevent emergencies from ever occurring."
This 120-minute session will teach you the skills to never give up when it matters most.

Program

first half Lecture: The Art of Self-Defense Through Knowledge
To protect yourself and your loved ones from becoming victims of crime, you will learn about topics such as "differences in muscle strength between men and women," "common types of crime at university," and "the dangers of dating violence and how to deal with them," enabling you to visualize the dangers around you.
Latter half Practical Training: Self-Defense Techniques
You will experience, through physical exercises, how to react and what to say when someone grabs your hand or shoulder, or hugs you.

Orie

2014 Japanese Women's Hard-Style Karate Champion, from Akita Prefecture.
Born to a Goju-ryu karate master, she began practicing karate at a young age. After getting married and having children, she encountered and joined Shorinji-ryu Kenkokan, a full-contact hard-style karate school. She is currently Japan's only female self-defense instructor.

  • Winner of the prefectural tournament for the All Japan Karate Championships, and participated in the national tournament (during childhood).
