On December 23, 2022, as part of the Cabinet Office's "Campaign to Eliminate Violence Against Women,"Self-defense workshop for a safe campus: "Crime prevention self-defense techniques for escaping"The event was held at the Academic Exchange Hall.
This workshop consists of a lecture in the first half to learn about crime prevention knowledge and a practical session of self-defense techniques in the second half. It was designed with the aim of improving the knowledge and awareness of crime prevention and self-defense among members of the university community.
We welcomed Ms. Orie, who is active in various media as a comprehensive crisis management advisor, as our lecturer, and approximately 50 people participated, including faculty, staff, and students.
In the first half of the lecture, Ms. Orie gave us a presentation on self-defense through knowledge, using concrete examples to illustrate topics such as crime prevention awareness and principles, the realities faced by victims, and the psychology of perpetrators.
After learning knowledge and principles in the classroom session, the second half of the session involved practical exercises where participants physically practiced "self-defense to escape," including how to react when grabbed by the hand or shoulder, how to hug someone, and how to speak up. It was impressive to see how much fun everyone seemed to be having in the practical exercises, perhaps because it was their first physical activity together in a while.
Voice of participants
- I realized that self-defense should be a last resort, and that it's crucial to be careful to avoid becoming a victim in the first place. I've also made a point of being more cautious when walking alone at night.
- I now understand very well that running away is important for protecting oneself. I will continue to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to escape. This was a good learning experience.
- The practical session in the second half was good, but I was glad I participated because I learned about avoiding danger during the lecture in the first half.
- The demonstration of self-defense techniques was great, but I also learned some surprisingly common misconceptions, such as "If you attack, you're likely to be counterattacked, so basically, don't fight and run away." It was very helpful. I tend to let my guard down and become complacent, but I will try to be more vigilant every day.
- Even though it was a short time, I was able to learn in a practical and enjoyable way.
In order to create a safe and secure campus environment for learning, and to ensure that no member of the student community becomes either a victim or a perpetrator, we hope that everyone will raise their knowledge and awareness of crime prevention, self-defense, and violence.
