On December 17th (Saturday), the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, in collaboration with the KDDI Foundation, held an interactive science experiment workshop for junior high school students titled "How to Make a Robot That 'Feels' and Moves."
When we sent out invitations to junior high schools in Sapporo, we received more applications than we had capacity for. Twelve students were selected by lottery to participate.
Associate Professor Koichi Kobayashi of the Graduate School of Information Science served as the instructor. After explaining the content, the staff performed final adjustments to the wheeled mobile robots that had been mostly prepared in advance. After the robots were completed, with the support of graduate student teaching assistants, the students programmed the robots and repeatedly made adjustments to ensure that they moved without deviating from the black lines drawn on paper as instructed.
On that day, we were able to truly feel the high level of public interest, as many media outlets came to cover the event.
Furthermore, the participant survey results were very positive, so we would like to continue implementing this project in the future.
Even if you weren't selected in this lottery, please apply again next time the event is held.
