[Support for Holding Research Meetings and Other Events Aiming to Become a PI] Report on the "Session for Young Bioacoustics Researchers Considering the Coexistence of Birds and Humans"

DEIThe Promotion Headquarters aims to help female researchers at this university strengthen their leadership skills through the organization of research meetings and other events, and to build networks that will lead to the development of the research they are leading."Support for organizing research meetings and other events by female researchers aiming to become principal investigators (PIs)"We are doing the following.

With this support, the "Session for Young Bioacoustic Researchers Considering the Coexistence of Birds and Humans" (a lecture, seminar, meeting, and discussion held during the 28th International Bioacoustics Congress [IBAC]) was presented by Associate Professor Masayo Soma of the Faculty of Science from October 27 to November 1, 2023.

Below, I will introduce the report.

[Research Development and Network Building]
With the support of this grant, we invited Dr. Claire Spottiswoode (University of Cape Town, South Africa; University of Cambridge, UK) to give a lecture, followed by a research discussion. We not only exchanged opinions on our respective ongoing research projects, but also had ample opportunity to frankly discuss "insights" that could serve as research seeds. This allowed us to consider the possibility of future collaborative research or co-authoring review papers. In particular, some of the birds I study are distributed in Africa, and Dr. Spottiswoode's insights, based in that region, were extremely valuable. We are also considering future visits to Cape Town by students and myself.

[Leader Skill]
I had plenty of experience running research meetings and organizing academic conferences before, so I didn't initially expect to learn much from organizing the meeting itself. However, receiving warm words and encouragement from many participants allowed me to reaffirm the significance of contributing to the development of the research community. Above all, I was repeatedly told by senior researchers to "take a deep breath and enjoy yourself first," and I realized that not getting too caught up in the operation of the meeting, but rather enjoying research exchange with a sense of ease, is a necessary skill for a leader.
