Report on the Senior Career Skills Enhancement Training: "Speaking Skills for Female Researchers as Leaders"

On Tuesday, February 20th, as part of training to support the improvement of leadership and career advancement among female researchers,"The ability to speak as a leader for female researchers"has been held.
Approximately 20 people participated in the event, which was held in a hybrid format combining in-person and Zoom sessions.

The online session featured Professor Kaori Yano (Associate Professor at Nagasaki University), author of "The Power of Speaking for the Strongest Leaders" (Discover Twenty-One), who also serves as a speech consultant for executives such as university presidents, politicians, and business leaders. The aim was to learn about the "speaking skills" required of leaders.

First, Professor Yano explained that leadership communication skills are a separate skill, and then described the "communication skills" required in society, categorized into three levels.
Next, the speaker discussed how to create and manipulate self-puppets using social psychology and self-presentation theory. In the group work, participants were tasked with selecting their own self-puppets from three categories (A: approachability, B: activity level, C: social desirability) and introducing themselves.
The group members listened to each other's self-introductions, tried to guess what type each person was, and gave each other feedback on what was going well and what was unclear. Everyone worked diligently in a friendly atmosphere.

During the Q&A session, participants asked questions about challenges they encountered during the group work, how to use self-puppets in real-world situations, and which type of puppet they would prefer. The event was a great success.

This training session focused on theory, but we plan to hold a practical session in the future.
We encourage everyone to participate.
*The practical session is scheduled to be held on the afternoon of Friday, June 28, 2024, at Building 1 of the General Research Building, Central Campus, Hokkaido University. (Added March 22, 2024)
