CoSTEP's lectures, which usually feature various instructors and are exclusively for enrolled students, will be specially opened to the public this time, in order to reach a wider audience, with lectures by Kim Won-young (author).
Ms. Kim's lecture falls under Module 5, Understanding Diverse Perspectives. This module covers the perspectives of key stakeholders involved in science and technology communication, which science and technology communicators should understand when collaborating with individuals and organizations from diverse backgrounds.
Ms. Kim uses a wheelchair due to osteogenesis imperfecta. She studied sociology and worked as a lawyer, and currently works primarily as a dancer and writer. Her notable works include "Becoming a Cyborg: Technology, Disability, and Our Imperfections," in which she discusses her disability, the current state of technology, and the society of the near future with science fiction writer Kim Cho-yeop, as well as "Not Hope, But Desire: Breaking Free from a World We Were Trapped In" and "No One Can Brand Us as a Failure," in which she presents her experiences in scathing language. She has also performed on stage as a performer in productions such as "The Law on Prohibition of Discrimination and Remedies for Rights in Love and Friendship," "Humanitarian Struggle: Artist's Edition," and "Becoming-Dancer." She has also spoken about her experiences as a person with a disability and as a dancer, including a dialogue with Kazuyo Morita about dance for people with disabilities and a dialogue with Asa Ito titled "Disability as a Question," published in the February 2024 issue of Iwanami's "Sekai" magazine.
How are public spaces, restructured through population decline and rapid automation, expanding or excluding accessibility for people with disabilities? This lecture will address these questions by connecting discussions on disability, technology, and art.
