FD Lecture: "Thinking about Diversity from the Majority's Perspective – Making Hidden 'Privileges' Visible" (May 30)


This faculty development (FD) lecture will focus on the various "majority characteristics" we possess and the "privileges" that come effortlessly as a result of being part of the majority, and will explore the mechanisms of structural inequality and discrimination.
We are pleased to welcome Professor Makiko Deguchi, who served as an instructor for the training video "Visualizing the Privileges of the Majority" (released in 2023), which was produced by Sophia University as part of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's "Diversity Research Environment Realization Initiative (Survey and Analysis)" project and garnered significant attention.DEIWe will hear about the insights needed to consider these issues as your own and to think about them in a meaningful way. This is a very valuable opportunity to hear directly from the speaker and ask questions, so please come to the venue and participate.

Makiko Deguchi
[Career]
She completed her doctoral studies in psychology at the Boston College Graduate School of Humanities. Her specialization is cultural psychology. At Sophia University, she teaches courses such as "The Psychology of Discrimination" and "The Psychology of Position: Considering the Privilege of the Majority." Her translated works include "Toward True Diversity" (Sophia University Press), and her co-authored works include "Rethinking Diversity" (Sophia University Press).
