Announcement of Call for Applications for the 4th L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Japan Fellowship for Fiscal Year 2009

[Overview] Established in 2005 as the Japanese version of a joint project created by L'Oréal and UNESCO in 1998 to promote the status of women scientists worldwide, this award is supported by cooperation between L'Oréal Japan and the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO. Its aim is to encourage young female researchers to continue their research activities at educational and research institutions in Japan, and to date, 12 female scientists have received the award.
 The award targets female researchers in the fields of life sciences and materials sciences who are currently enrolled in or planning to enroll in a doctoral program. Two recipients will be selected from each field, for a total of four recipients. The recipients will be announced at the awards ceremony (scheduled to be held in mid-2009), where they will each receive a certificate and a scholarship of 1 million yen.

<Public recruitment period> From November 17, 2008 (Monday) to February 28, 2009 (Saturday) (Postmark on the deadline date is valid)

<Qualification for application> Applicants must be women under 40 years of age who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program (postgraduate course) or planning to enroll in a doctoral program in the fields of life sciences or materials sciences, and who are able to engage in education or research in Japan for one year after the grant is awarded.

<Grant details> Certificates of merit and scholarships of 1 million yen were awarded to four students in total, two each from the fields of life sciences and materials science.
