Recruitment for the 2015 Science and Engineering Support Caravan Team

Since 18, Hokkaido University has been running the "Science Support Caravan Team" as part of its program to encourage female junior and senior high school students to choose science-related career paths. With the hope of increasing the number of female students in science fields, dozens of students visit high schools and other institutions to set up easy-to-understand and creative science experience booths, allowing female junior and senior high school students (and boys in co-educational schools as well) to freely participate in the activities.
Past Caravan Activities
We are recruiting faculty members, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students to cooperate and participate as caravan members in events planned to be held at two locations this year.
Please see the recruitment details below, and if you are interested, please contact the support office.
We especially encourage graduates of Fuji Women's Junior and Senior High School to participate.

Recruitment details for the Science and Engineering Support Caravan Team

Business Name

Support program for girls in junior and senior high school choosing science-related career paths.

Objective

Through outreach experiment events that introduce and allow students to experience research experiments conducted by the university's science and engineering departments, we aim to cultivate interest and motivation in science and engineering fields among elementary and junior high school girls, as well as other students. At the same time, we aim to convey that researchers of all genders can thrive in the science and engineering fields, and to change the societal notion that "science and engineering are for boys and humanities are for girls."

Event schedule

  1. October 14th (Wednesday) Fuji Girls' Junior and Senior High School: School event (with some public participation)
  2. December 19th (Sat) Hokkaido University Academic Exchange Hall: Public event open to the general public

Activities and participation requirements for caravan team staff.

  • In a large venue such as a gymnasium, booths will be set up using long tables, and research will be presented with easy-to-understand experiments and observations that participants can experience. Alternatively, the research will be presented in an easy-to-understand manner using a projector or similar device.
  • Participate in one or more of the above events. (Participation in multiple or all of them is welcome, of course.)
  • The booth manager will be a faculty member from Hokkaido University. (The faculty member does not need to attend the event on the day.)
  • It is desirable to have at least one woman as staff at each booth, but it is also acceptable to have a staff composed entirely of men.
  • Students, graduate students, and postdoctoral staff will be employed as part-time technical assistants and will receive a salary. Students who have lectures during the event hours cannot be employed.
  • The support office will cover the cost of consumables and other supplies necessary for booth exhibitions (including laboratory equipment and reagents). You can also use equipment owned by the support office, such as microscopes, miniature centrifuges, and constant-temperature water baths; please inquire for details.
