We held the 10th "Meet the FResHU" role model roundtable discussion.

Presenter: Saori Haneda, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Function Science, Division of Drug Discovery Science, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Theme

"A way of life that doesn't leave the negative aspects of each stage of life unaddressed."
Let's use what's available to us correctly and achieve results!

Professor Haneda, who conducts research on Alzheimer's disease, calmly analyzed her current situation step by step as a researcher, and applied for research grants that were easier to obtain, such as being a woman, having given birth, and being a young researcher. When the names of the various research grants that Professor Haneda applied for were revealed, the participants listened with serious expressions.
Recently, we learned that some research grants have higher age limits for women than men due to the need to accommodate women who have given birth, and that it is important to prepare strategies based on the types of research being accepted, gather ideas from lab members, and prepare a variety of themes for application. Participants immediately began exchanging opinions on how to obtain research grants.
Furthermore, when she wasn't hired, she started to think about the reasons why the hiring company rejected her.
She also shared stories about the difficulties she faced during childbirth and taught me that it's impossible to plan your life perfectly. She emphasized the importance of doing your best with what you can do at the time.

Many participants expressed the difficulties of continuing research in a fixed-term position, and also voiced their desire for more information and services regarding childcare facilities for those raising children.
Thank you very much, Professor Haneda and all the participants!
The next roundtable discussion will be held on Wednesday, November 21st, with Dr. Tomoko Akama, Project Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science, as the guest speaker. Please join us!
