The Women Researchers Support Office wanted to help junior and senior high schools that wanted to increase science experiments but lacked the necessary equipment and machinery, so in September 2007, they participated in the Bellmark program.
Then, in January of this year, after accumulating enough points, we launched an initiative titled "Let's Learn More About Science Using Hokkaido University's Bell Marks!" and solicited applications from all junior and senior high schools in Hokkaido for donations of science supplies.
As a result, we received applications from a total of seven junior and senior high schools. After careful consideration, we decided to donate science supplies to four schools.
Then, on April 30, 2009, our department head, Sanae Ariga, presented an aquarium and a medium-sized aquarium circulation system to Sapporo Asahigaoka High School, the recipient of the donation.
Afterward, we toured the science lab and received an explanation about the planned use of the aquarium.
We hope that these donated items will be used in future science education activities to stimulate and respond to students' interest in science.
We will provide updates on other schools that have received donations as they become available.
Our department plans to continue these kinds of activities in the future.
