International Symposia

International Symposium for Women Scientists 2014

Information

Time

October 27th – 29th, 2014

Venue

Frontier Research in Applied Sciences Building, Hokkaido University

Theme

“Water: Science we do on our Mother Earth, the Planet of Water”

  • Water is essential for all lives on earth and thus not only marine biology but also other fields of biology can be included.
  • Anhydrobiosis, drought tolerance can paradoxically be interesting topics, which may be connected with food resource issues and wider possibility of living organisms in space.
  • Water is also the major target of environmental scientists and ecologist. Water is of great interest for astrophysicists, too.
  • Water energy systems might be of interest of participants.
  • Photolysis of water is a key of artificial photochemical systems, which are of great hope for sustainable and clean energy production.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Akira Fujishima
President, Tokyo University of Science, Japan
Dr. Ralph E. Pudritz
Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, McMaster University, Canada
Dr. Kazuko Yamaguchi-Shinozaki
Professor, University of Tokyo, Japan
Dr. Maria Miguel
Professor, Coimbra University

Aim of the symposium

Encourage transdisciplinary research collaborations among women scientists under a big theme

The keynote speeches by the worldwide prominent scientists and the discussions with them will give various inspirations to the participants. The participants will have the chance to share their scientific thoughts about their diverse interests in a fresh and open manner, which could lead to future collaborations.

Support networking among women scientists leaders in Japan, Europe and the US

30 – 40 women active scientists, mostly at 30’s and 40’s, who are highly motivated to collaborate internationally and interdisciplinary.

Organizing Committee

Hokkaido University

Dr. Asuka NANBO, Graduate School of Medicine
Dr. Koji YAMADA, Faculty of Environmental Earth Science
